The should-have-been NCAA school member
I was at the Nike Summer League covering the games when I saw my high school alma mater basketball head coach watching on the sidelines, waiting for their turn at the court.
I walked to where he was and started a little chat, catching up with the goings-on in the school and the sports teams since the last time I was there, which was a few months ago covering a collegiate league which one of his assistant coaches is the president.
Talk turned to the school’s preparation for NCAA South when the coach was actually referring to our NCAA-Manila application. That so-called application to the oldest premier collegiate league in the country has been an urban legend in our school ever since I graduated, which is exactly ten academic years ago.
It partly became true when we became part of NCAA South. It was a consolation of sorts. And I know way back then than joining even a second-tier collegiate league would make our overall sports program improve. It did.
For starters, our high school basketball program elevated from PAYA to PRADA. What those acronyms mean, beats me, but they are being tossed around as ladderized secondary developmental leagues.
It came somewhat as a shock to me to find out that we were the fifth NCAA-Manila applicant. Not Saint Francis of Assisi College System, which already severed with its mother league NCRAA and participated in another alphabet league. The four other institutions in the running have been mentioned in previous releases.
What is good to know is that the satellite institutions of our school in other parts of the country are willing to help my alma mater in its membership. But of course. Being there is already one foot at the door and being namedropped as one of the member schools of NCAA-Manila is a prestige in itself.
In their own little way, though, some of the provincial branches of our school are providing us a steady stream of athletes to participate in NCAA South. With that, a simple thanks coming from me.
This extensive network is essential. I should know. I studied in a university where it is a member of a system comprised of about 19 institutions and counting. And it is good to know that there is someone out there is an alumnus of my alma maters wherever I go.
Just sucks to know that the reason our application was rejected is that because we only have a cemented basketball court in our gym and not a hardwood one. I mean, what does that have to do with our application? As if NCAA-Manila would play games in our gym.
At least we tried. And the fact of the matter is, our school could pay those fees at the drop of a hat.
It may still be an urban legend until it becomes an actuality. For now, when talk goes to our supposed NCAA-Manila membership, I could say, “You know what, there is grain of truth in it.”

There should be an injury list for them too
In an apparently slow day in local sports, I would digress a bit and talk about other stuff I have not been religiously following recently.
Early this year, Phil Jackson missed some games because of health problems. Recently, I read an article that Jerry Sloan had his knee replaced.
I did not know coaches could have sports injuries also considering all they do is bark instructions and pace the sidelines. So much passion, so much dedication. Back in the day, Red Aerubach could even smoke a cigar in the old Boston Garden when he knows victory is at hand, come out healthy, and retire as the best coach of his time and probably up to now.
If you want passion, no one comes close to our local cage coaches. On the collegiate level, you had Joe Lipa and Aric del Rosario screaming their lungs out. In the PBA, Chot Reyes and Yeng Guiao put their hearts on their sleeves. Tim Cone has been known to explode occasionally to fire up his team. Alfrancis Chua has been known to be able to kick a seat out of its hinges.
The first two is still alive and kicking still contributing to basketball in different capacities. The next three have handled the National Team. Chua seems to be the least fortunate of the bunch but he will always be recalled as the one who unties his hair in victory.
My point is, save for Ron Jacobs, none of the aforementioned cage tacticians have suffered cardiac arrests considering what they go through and how they deal with it. I mean the "Zen Master" for all his serenity actually needs to skip games because of health reasons. And now, I just recalled the same case with Larry Brown back when he was with the Detroit Pistons.
While they are at it, the NBA should also consider an injury reserve list for general managers. There were reports that former New York Knicks GM Isiah Thomas passed out in his home and that Danny Ainge had to be treated for a heart attack.

The PBL Unity Cup non-ranked list
Every time I look at the current roster of the PBL teams, I just say to myself, “What the heck.” Partly because the truncated season is already beyond its halfway mark. Five teams with 20 players in the roster at most. Are they baseball teams or what?
Since Oracle has also already solidified its claim for the first semifinals seed, it is up to the four other squads to determine which gets the other one. Which leads me to asking myself, “Is it still worth doing this?”
Come to think of it, no team actually strikes me as appealing.
1 Oracle Residences and Dorms Titans – that is a mouthful of a team name. Then again, they have a mouthful of a squad also with the core being made up of former Harbour Centre cagers. What Oracle mostly picked from the dispersal draft are former Toyota players. So, unofficially, this is an Oracle-Toyota conglomerate. Tell me now, how can you beat two teams? Even if they have the most number of players presently absent because they are training for the Smart Gilas RP Team in Las Vegas.
2 Magnolia Purewater Wizards – to make it easier for me, let us just do it in the order they finished in the PBL PG Flex Linoleum Cup. Al Magpayo is injured and so is Jonathan Banal. Who else is likeable in the team? Neil Pascual and Marvin Hayes maybe.
3 Cobra Energy Drink Warriors – team UE. Growing weary of collecting offseason collegiate titles, the Warriors are now targeting the PBL. Nice.
4 Licealiz Shampoo Hair Doctors – this is an automatic entrant to the ‘weird team names’ list. I tell you, a lot of PBL franchises are guilty of this. It always gives me a laugh whenever I think that Chris Tiu plays in this squad. I mean Chris Tiu and Licealiz in the same sentence. Would it not be funny?
5 Pharex Bidang Generix – the thrust was on chemistry and the management decided to stick with the core. With the rollercoaster that is the second to fifth teams in the standings, I guess the Bidang Generix are still at the thick of the fight. Not bad.

The UAAP/NCAA bias meter
I am a sportswriter and when covering events, I should be as objective as possible. Therein lies the conflict when the league I am covering involves institutions I am or was directly involved in or connected to me in some manner. Either those or I just grew fond of the team through time.
In summary, the former is bias by default and the other is bias by acclimation. But it is just natural, is not it? Besides, I could control my writing so as not to show apparent subjectivity.
Now, here is my bias list for the coming collegiate sports season. Take note that their seniors or men’s basketball team takes considerable weight over the school’s other programs.
1 De La Salle University-Manila – as in like duh! There should be no arguments with this one.
2 De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde – but of course, it is natural they would be in second. Go De La Salle Philippines! Represent!
3 Colegio de San Juan de Letran – have somebody show Cedelf Tupas this entry. So that he is not accusing me of being biased for the wrong team.
4 Jose Rizal University – it is near from my house, the campus is improving, and the basketball program is thriving. You can see the dedication that they want to change the image of the school from a supposed hopia factory. Or maybe not. They just made an acronym out of it (Highly Outstanding People in Action).
5 University of the Philippines-Diliman – one reason is that I like the UP Cheering Squad more than its rival. And there is also the girlfriend factor.
*nothing follows*
