The UAAP/NCAA bias meter

I am a sportswriter and when covering events, I should be as objective as possible. Therein lies the conflict when the league I am covering involves institutions I am or was directly involved in or connected to me in some manner. Either those or I just grew fond of the team through time.

In summary, the former is bias by default and the other is bias by acclimation. But it is just natural, is not it? Besides, I could control my writing so as not to show apparent subjectivity.

Now, here is my bias list for the coming collegiate sports season. Take note that their seniors or men’s basketball team takes considerable weight over the school’s other programs.

1
De La Salle University-Manila – as in like duh! There should be no arguments with this one.

2
De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde – but of course, it is natural they would be in second. Go De La Salle Philippines! Represent!

3
Colegio de San Juan de Letran – have somebody show Cedelf Tupas this entry. So that he is not accusing me of being biased for the wrong team.

4
Jose Rizal University – it is near from my house, the campus is improving, and the basketball program is thriving. You can see the dedication that they want to change the image of the school from a supposed hopia factory. Or maybe not. They just made an acronym out of it (Highly Outstanding People in Action).

5
University of the Philippines-Diliman – one reason is that I like the UP Cheering Squad more than its rival. And there is also the girlfriend factor.

The reluctant NBA playoff bracket

For someone who intentionally did not follow the current NBA season except for fantasy team purposes, I do not have to do this. In essence, I will just be blindly throwing darts on this one.

2009 F1 Drivers appreciation list

Part two of two...

1
Felipe Massa (BRA, Ferrari) - He was one turn away from a driver's championship. Daym.

2
Kimi Raikkonen (FIN, Ferrari) - Which leads me to the disappointment I felt with then defending champion Kimi underperforming last year.

3
Fernando Alonso (ESP, Renault) - Lewis Hamilton have been stepping on too many toes lately, whether intentional or not. I have to take sides.

4
Sebastien Bourdais (FRA, Toro Rosso) - Because I have no one else to put here, might as well put someone who is driving a Ferrari engine.

5
Sebastien Buemi (SUI, Toro Rosso) - Same here.

6
Kazuki Nakajima (JPN, Williams) - With Japanese teams leaving left and right, it is good to know that the Samurai is still represented. Samurai? Oops, wrong sport.

7
Nick Heidfeld (GER, BMW Sauber) - Heidfeld is the only few that has remained active since the 1990s. The only other significant driver will be mentioned below.

8
Nico Rosberg (GER, Williams) - A lot expectations was heaped on him upon his entry. Then came better skilled drivers who had better fortunes like Robert Kubica and, ahem, Hamilton.

9
Robert Kubica (POL, BMW Sauber) - His performance last year caught me by surprise. I expect him to pull off more surprises.

10
Mark Webber (AUS, Red Bull) - In his past lifetime, I recall Webber driving a Minardi. Look where he is now. Still alive and kicking.

11
Timo Glock (GER, Toyota) - Weird that I have not written anything yet for this driver moments before posting this.

12
Jarno Trulli (ITA, Toyota) - Same here.

13
Sebastian Vettel (GER, Red Bull) - This season sets an unusual record for having the most people with near similar first names. As for Vettel's skills, it is there, not just noticeable.

14
Nelsinho Piquet (BRA, Renault) - I did not know Piquet has a cool first name reminiscent of cool football players coming from that country. It never occured to me he is Brazilian in the first place.

15
Giancarlo Fisichella (ITA, Force India) - Because he could not deliver, he got 'demoted'.

16
Adrian Sutil (GER, Force India) - The Schumacher may have been gone but there is no lacking of German blood this season.

17
Jenson Button (GBR, Brawn GP) - He is a good racer, methinks. Just his luck that he got overtaken by another Brit. Anyway, there is still a lot of future ahead for the young guy.

18
Rubens Barrichello (BRA, Brawn GP) - How does it feel to be the resident senior citizen now, eh?

19
Heikki Kovalainen (FIN, McLaren) - Just because.

20
Lewis Hamilton (GBR, McLaren) - He is F1's version of Kobe Bryant. I have nothing but seething words for you, mate.

2009 F1 Constructors appreciation list

As years go by, it seems that I get to watch live F1 races less and less. Which sucks. Considering how exciting last season was although the ending was not exactly to my liking.

And look at the current season zoom by. With two races down and little consideration to the already concluded grand prixes, here my are appreciation lists for this year.

1
Ferrari - Sure, Michael Schumacher is now just a footnote in the history of the storied team. Nevertheless, I am still seeing red even with all the flak they are getting and despite that, Ferrari still emerged as the constructors' champion last year.

2
Scuderia Toro Rosso-Ferrari - The only other team being run with a Ferrari engine this season. Because of that, Scuderia Toro Rosso gets second dibs.

3
Williams-Toyota - With the exit of Honda, only one Asian team remains. Yes, this is blatant geographical bias.

4
Renault - The only non-Ferrari team I like the most and the only non-McLaren team I despise the least. Based on that statement, you will know where this list is headed.

5
Red Bull Racing-Renault - The two Red Bull teams have been dark horses and middle of the pack teams ever since. Which makes them fun to watch because they never went through the rough learning curve of new teams.

6
BMW Sauber - Based on the wins they got last year, BMW Sauber is this year's third wheel depending on how Renault would perform this season.

7
Williams - They had a rough stretch midway this decade but they are catching up. Now, it is up to Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima to deliver.

8
Force India-Mercedes - The default last place team ever since Super Aguri packed its bags. Which makes for good underdog stories.

9
Brawn GP-Mercedes - Ross Brawn, the brains behind Ferrari is actually using Mercedes engines to power the former Honda team. Pffft.

10
McLaren-Mercedes - For some weird reason, the rivalry of the scarlet horse and the silver arrow continue to this day. And they have been at each ever since I started following F1 with much more regularity late last millennium.

PBA 2008-09 app list

1 Rain or Shaine Elastopainters – You have Gabe, you have Mercado. How could you go wrong? Plus former Archers TY Tang and Ryan Araña and they are a shoo-in as my favourite team. And then there is this report that Harbour Centre owner Mikee Romero wants to enter the PBA via the backdoor (minor stake in the Air 21/Burger King franchise), then there is no reason for me to wait for Harbour to elevate to the big league.

2
Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters - I have no choice. Despite trading Don Allado, if not for Macmac Cardona and Renren Ritualo, they would have been automatically bottom in my list or at least at the bottom. I am not that ruthless.

3
Sta. Lucia Realtors – The reason they are here despite the fact that Marlou Aquino and Dennis Espino are still active in the lineup is because of Joseph Yeo and Kelly Williams. And then there is Ryan Reyes as an upgrade of Ryan Cabagnot.

4
Coca Cola Tigers – Speaking of Cabagnot, here is where he plays along with unlikeables John Arigo and Ronjay Buenafe. But hey, Asi Taulava is here and so is Mark Telan. Nic Belasco is also aboard. And what, no sign of Ateneans wherever!

5
Air 21 Express – There was a time when Air 21 was known to be a cheapskate squad. Then they started winning and there were no more lousy trades. Except for the one involving Ranidel de Ocampo and Don Allado.

6
San Miguel Beermen – There was a time when they were first in my list. Not anymore. Especially when you still have Wesley Gonzales in tow. And Mick Pennisi. Eeew.

7
Barangay Ginebra Kings – Come to think of it, everything is downhill from number five. Sure, they have Sunday Salvacion and Willie Wilson in tow. But the spotlight is more on Ronald Tubid. The catch is Mark Caguioa has not played a single game yet this season. Eeek. I just remembered I spotted Allan Caidic, who is back as assistant coach, and team manager Hector Calma on the bench. That should count for something, shouldn’t it?

8
Red Bull Barakos – Suffering from a last minute demotion is Red Bull. They now own the sellout (as in they sell all of their players out to other teams) tag especially after disposing Cyrus Baguio for trash picks. That was the last straw for Yeng Guiao to finally say “I quit”.

9
Alaska Aces – There was also a time when Alaska was team Archers. Not anymore. They might have Kelvin dela Peña but LA Tenorio is the starting point guard.

10
Purefoods Giants – Want to make their team name sound worse? How about Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants. Imagine that for a moment. Rommel Adducul might have returned from cancer but nobody else is likeable in the roster. Not even the head coach. You have Big Gay James, Choke-rby Raymundo, and E-Vil in the same lineup. I beg you, please trade Jondan Salvador to a more decent squad!

WPBL 2008 PG Flex Linoleum Cup appreciation list

Yes, the playoffs are underway. So, what?

1. Sunkist-De La Salle Archers – they may not have won a game but they are still my fave team. Duh! Go, Ginny Velarde!

2. Oracle-Benilde Cool Blazers – another duh moment here. Good thing Leonette Salvacion is playing for this squad.

3. Smart Buddy-UP – Jonas Terrado likes this team for Sai Sadorra, TJ Jurado for Fille Cainglet, while I have my eyes on Danielle Bautista. And oh yeah, Jac Cruz is on the roster.

4. Ever Bilena Gandang Pinay – hooray for De La Salle Patriot Emma Morada for making it to the final cut!

5. Muscle Tape-Lyceum Pirates – what, no Machiko Matsuno? Boo, you! Heard she has a heart problem. That could be fixed. *wink* *wink*

6. Xtreme Magic Sing-RP Youth – what I like with the national juniors squad is that despite the handicap, they fight until the end.

7. Discovery Suites-RP Team – this National squad is an enigma to me. No Matsuno, no Fil-Foreigners. And is that gangling Chinese naturalized yet?

8. Mail and More Comets – I have no idea who their players are.

9. Oracle-Far Eastern Tamaraws – Romero and Montinola tie-up here. Get back to me when the memorandum of understanding is already done.

10. Nutri-C-Ateneo Eagles – oh, come on. Where else do you think I would put them?

PBL 2008 PG Flex Linoleum Cup appreciation list

I am pretty sure things would jumble up in the next conference this summer, so let us just take this one at a time.

1. Toyota Otis Sparks – my favourite team from players to head coach to consultant. I feel no hate with Letran, Jose Rizal, De La Salle, and Mapua players.

2. Pharex Generix – kinda forgot why they are my second favoured team. Must be because they look good on paper and that they have upside. They are also scrappy and uptempo.

3. Harbour Centre Batang Pier – sure, the roster has Rico Nuts, Peejay Barua, and Jerwin Gaco. But teaming with up with Far Eastern University leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I feel betrayed.

4. Bacchus Energy Warriors – the moniker change should have been a giveaway. It is University of the East sans Dindo Pumaren. Do I smell something cooking here or is it just me?

5. Magnolia Purewater Wizards – team unheralded always they are. Trademark of a typical Koy Banal squad.

6. Hapee Complete Protectors – while they do not have Ateneans save for Chris Tiu on paper and Jobe Nkemakolam, I will put them above Burger King just because the head coach is a Lasallian.

7. Burger King Stunners – here is something apparent, a BK-San Beda College tie-up. Boo, you!

The 2008 PBL Lipovitan Amino Sports Cup appreciation list

We are now nearing halfway of the 2008 PBL Lipovitan Amino Sports Cup and we have more than gotten a picture of how the teams are faring as of the moment. This early, we have had our share of pleasant surprises, both good and bad, the I-see-that-coming scenarios, and the what-do-they-need-to-do-in-order-to-get-out-of-their-rut moments.

Article is also posted in Coded Mushroom.

1.
Harbour Centre Batang Pier – this team is stacked from higher management, to the active lineup, even in the coaching staff. There is no other way to describe a super team when you get to buyout superstars of other teams to become mere cogs in a great machine, hire two champion coaches and turn one into a consultant, re-christen your mega squad as the de facto National Team, and return home virtually like gods with the gold medal hanging around their necks. You can feel the swagger of confidence, the aura of invincibility emanating from them. Enough of the poetry. All I am saying is that it would be short of ridiculous if you do not go for a roster this loaded.

2.
Hapee Toothpaste Complete Protectors – they are no Sparklers or Teethmasters anymore for they are already complete. Making them whole is total package Gabe Norwood. Barring major injuries down the line, he could eventually surpass Danny Seigle and go toe-to-toe with Kelly Williams in the excitement meter, the George Mason alum’s elevation to the pro ranks is eagerly awaited. And before I run out of space mentioning just one guy, it would be hard to imagine a PBL tournament without a Cecilio Pedro-backed franchise, but correct me if I’m wrong, it is just that the governors in the PBA need little more cajoling in considering accommodating two more teams in the immediate future, let us say next season.

3.
Toyota Otis Sparks – With former Green Archer Cholo Villanueva in the roster, it is by default that Toyota Otis would be one of the favored teams in my personal list. Still, the rest of the names in the roll call are nothing to sneeze at. Chito Jaime has some recall, playing then for Colegio de San Lorenzo in NCRAA, where he and his teammates humiliated my DLSU-D Patriots time and time again, before transferring to St. Clare to run up his eligibility in NAASCU, and Patrick Cabahug is a close acquaintance. Having fiery Aric del Rosario side-by-side with equally expressive Ariel Vanguardia gives the bench much needed cred. With a team record of 0-5, it is easy to spot problem areas and the most noticeable is the point guard position. Having not much options between one-dimensional court generals in “I only shoot from 20 feet” Ronald Bucao, and ahem, defensive ace Eugene Tan, Villanueva is forced to play point, one of the few things he could not do back in high school nor in college. Picking up Aps Cuan from the abundant Harbour Centre reserve list is just an additional warm body at the most. And what is the deal with the three Letran players getting more court time that the triumvate of Vanguardia’s own JRU Bombers? Then again, if the tables were turned, I might have screamed favoritism instead.

4.
Noosa Shoes Stars – the opening day surprise package left a good first impression on me. This is apart from the fact that Noosa head coach Leo Isaac overachieved of sorts for Mapua in the last NCAA basketball season and stole the NCRAA cage trophy for AU out of St. Francis’ grasp. And here is an example of out of a few where your enemies yesterday are your allies the next day. Tasked to build a team nearly from scratch at a moment’s notice, Isaac took whatever scraps are left on the table, and in the process ended up with the core of JRU’s miracle squad. Add to that mix Bomber one time in his life Veejay Serios. If not Arellano Chiefs Gio Ciriacruz and Adrian Celada and last minute acquisition Kelvin dela Peña, the former Ginebra player might have felt lonely out there.

5.
San Mig Coffee Kings – this has trademark Koy Banal-type of players from top to bottom. Not because they played for him during their college heydays, but because they are most unheralded, if not unheard of. This reminded me one of the times when Banal employed the recesses of his bench to pull off a rabbit of a surprise. In local parlance, that is called “hugot”. He has this propensity of turning role players and scrubs into one-day superstars. At least, if their playing careers did not flourish due to circumstance, they could look back and recall that one time they had a career game. I also owe former Patriot Joel Solis copies of archived photos taken for our school paper.

6.
Pharex Medics – everybody loves a winner and Pharex has elevated itself from “who is that?” to “yeah, I heard good things about that team” status. Emer Oreta and Donn Villamin used to be eyesores back in UST, but now, they are playing good music along with new generation Growling Tiger Francis Allera. Who would have thought? By the way, nice to see Jean Alabanza back in basketball although in a different role. The first and last time I saw him prior to this was in a heated UAAP game I was watching on tv. This was back in 1999.

7.
Bacchus Energy Drink Raiders – think about this. You have at your disposal three point guards, but the best player in that position is not even in the depth chart. I am referring to eternally playing out of position Christian Luanzon. During the latter part of Aric del Rosario’s tenure in UST, the lineup was so short he was forced to play number four. Sure, he has shown flashes of being a poor man’s Gabe Norwood that has better freethrow shooting, but would it not be more effective if he plays as a tall point guard? Coupled with that uncanny high offensive awareness, maybe things could get brighter for the Raiders. One thing good going for Bacchus though is that it has one of the most imaginative and humorous tv ads in recent history.

8.
Burger King Whoppers – finally, I present team UP. Maroons scatter the roster from tactician Allan Gregorio to alumni Mike Bravo, Nestor David, and Abby Santos, to current UP student Woody Co. Add in Khiel Misa from UP… HDS. Santos, Francis Barcellano, and Chris Baluyot should be thankful they are no mere PBA practice players, or worse, languishing in the waivers waiting to be called for duty. What takes the cake though is that Bravo’s game has not matured a single bit ever since I saw him compete with Paolo Mendoza in a shooting contest. Mind you, they were playing for the same team. To make up for it, BK’s chicken sandwich is the best out there.

No, they are the people who congratulated me because I am already over and done with college. Thus, they get to be included in the acknowledgment part of my thesis.

JC, actually you knew beforehand so I did not bother including you in the group message. Then again, your response of, "Nakakahiya ka. Ang tagal mo naman," does not count as a valid congratulatory reply.

But... you make up for it and you could still be part of the greeting portion of the inlay card.
